Laser Hair Removal Information

Hair Cycles

Laser hair removal can only destroy the hair follicle in the anogen stage of growth.  Every hair on our body will go through 3 stages to make a full hair growth cycle.  Most people will go through a complete cycle every 4-12 weeks.

Intervals

Due to the stages of a hair growth cycle your treatments need to be spaced 4-8 weeks apart for best results.

Permanent

Laser Hair Removal is permanent reduction NOT 100% removal for life.  Because…

1.      Not every hair is in the same stage at the same time.

2.      Hormonal Fluctuations play a huge role in hair growth, especially if there is a hormonal imbalance such as PCOS.

3.      Laser Hair Removal only works on BROWN AND BLACK HAIR COLORS.

4.      We are constantly producing new hair throughout our life.

Medications

You cannot be on any light sensitive medications 5-7 days prior to a laser treatment.  The laser is a light form and you can have serious complications if on these medications during treatment.  Most of these medications are antibiotics but always disclose all medications to your technician including all prescription medications, herbal supplements, vitamins and over the counter medications.

Skin Care Products

Please refrain from spray tanning or selfless tanners 10 days prior to a laser treatment.  Also, do not use highly acidic topical products 72 hours before a treatment.  These products include glycolic acid, lactic acid, retinols, benzyl peroxide and salicylic acid.  Please disclose all skin care products you are using to your technician before every treatment.

Sun/Tanning

YOU CAN NOT BE TAN TO HAVE LASER TREATMENTS!!!! You must be at your natural color in the area being treated at every treatment.  Laser attracts to pigment and if you change the natural pigment of your skin the laser will attack your skin instead of the hair follicle, which will result in burns.  YOU WILL BE TURNED AWAY FOR TREATMENT IF YOU COME IN WITH A TAN!

Skin Color

Laser hair removal is safe and effective on all skin colors.  An ideal candidate is light skin and dark hair but it works just as effectively on dark skin colors.  The only difference is ethnic(skin types 4-6) typically will take more treatments than lighter skin colors.

Shaving

You need to come to your appointment shaved 12-24 hours before an appointment.  Absolutely NO WAXING, TWEEZING OR THREADING 4 weeks before your first appointment or in-between appointments.  Shaving does not make your hair grow thicker, coarser, change color or grow more hair.  This has been medically proven false by doctors all over the world and is an old wives’ tale.  Your hair follicle does not have a brain and does not know how you remove it.

Exfoliating

It is important to exfoliate a couple times a week for the first 3 weeks following a laser treatment to help dead hairs to shed properly.  Do not use abrasive forms of exfoliation such as salt or apricot scrubs.  If on your face only exfoliate twice a week.  It usually takes 1-3 weeks after a treatment for the anogen hairs that were destroyed to push their way out of the follicle.

Side Effects

Most side effects are gone in 2-24 hours after a treatment.  The most common side effects are redness, follicular edema, mild sun burn sensations, itchiness and bruising.  Other side effects include crusting, blistering and hyper or hypo pigmentation.  If any side effects persist more than 24 hours please contact your technician immediately.

Hair removal is permanent reduction.  Most clients will see a reduction in hair of 75% or greater after 6 treatments spaced no more than 12 weeks apart.
