Chemical Peel Information

A Chemical Peel is a form of liquid exfoliation using an acid solution to exfoliate the outer layers of the skin to improve skin texture and skin tone.  Chemical Peels are great for fine lines, wrinkles, acne, mild acne scarring and uneven discolored skin.  Depending on the depth of the peel and your skin care concerns will determine how many treatments it will take for your skin to have a smoother, more radiant and youthful appearance.

There are three classifications of depths of chemical peels. A Light Chemical Peel is superficial and will remove the outer layer of dead skin on the epidermis(the top layer of skin). These types of chemical peels are safe to do every 2-4 weeks and and great for fine lines, fine wrinkles, acne and uneven skin tone.  Usually a treatment plan of 6 treatments will give you best results and then you should have one done every 3-6 months to maintain results.  A Medium Chemical Peel will exfoliate skin on the epidermis and upper layer of the dermis.  This depth of chemical peel is great for deeper wrinkles, acne scarring, uneven skin tone, age spots and melasma.  It is best to space these peels 4 weeks apart and to do a series of 3-6 treatments for best results.  To maintain results you should have a medium depth chemical peel every 3-12 months.  A Deep Chemical Peel removes skin cells from the epidermis as well as the mid-lower dermis.  This type of peel is usually done in a doctors office and can take several weeks to heal from.  A deep chemical peel is best for advanced aging, very deep wrinkles, deep scars and precancerous growths.  Usually a deep chemical peel is only done once and should not be repeated.

Most light to medium depth peels performed by an Esthetician  contain Glycolic Acid, Retinols, Salicylic Acid, Lactic Acid, Madelic Acid and TCA(trichloracetic acid).

Glycolic Acid(AHA) breaks down keratin buildup  and dissolve desmosomes between skin cells.  This acid is great for aging skin and clients  prone to clogged pores.

Salicylic Acid(BHA) is used for oily skin, large pores and acne prone skin.  This acid is great for dissolving excess oil in pores and helping to control acne flare ups.

Lactic Acid is a derivative of milk and is great at hydrating dry skin and lightening pigmentation.

Mandelic Acid  is derived from almonds  and is great for a client with pigmentation or acne.

Retinols are derived from Vitamin A and break up acne impactions and increase cellular turn over.  Retinols are great for acne prone skin and aging skin.

TCA  is a medium depth peel and is great for  advanced aging, Melasma or pigmented skin and acne scarring.
